INDEPENDENCE – The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect who was reportedly captured on video robbing the parish landfill.
According to TPSO officials, Derrick Self, 45, allegedly assaulted an armed security guard and confiscated the guard’s firearm and personal belongings shortly after 6 a.m. on July 4. The security guard was taken to the hospital and treated for moderate injuries.
Officials believe that Self also broke into the buildings and stole items from numerous vehicles in the parking lot.
Authorities say Self was taken into custody at his residence in St. Helena Parish after a tip led to his identification. Officials say Self was “found to be in possession of property belonging to the Tangipahoa Parish landfill as well as the security guard.”
Self was charged with aggravated second degree battery, aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, vehicular burglary and felony possession of a firearm among other charges.
