Suspicious packages from overseas lead to Amite man’s arrest

AMITE – An investigation from multiple agencies led to the seizure of illegal goods imported from Bulgaria and Colombia and the arrest of an Amite man on multiple charges.

The investigation began in March when homeland security investigators notified Louisiana State Police that U.S. Customs and Border Protection identified a suspicious shipment from Bulgaria that had Amite as a final destination.

Police say the shipment contained two counterfeit General Motors vehicle identification number (VIN) plates.

Another package from Bulgaria destined for Amite was intercepted six days later. That package contained two Ford VIN plates. Police say on the same day, a third package from Columbia destined for Amite was found. That package had “multiple forms” of counterfeit identity.

As a part of the investigation, detectives identified Tijuan Rayun Self as a suspect whose residence matched the same address as the destination of the first and third packages.

A search of Self’s residence revealed a 2019 Ford F-250 truck that had been stolen from a dealership in Tylertown, MS, in February on the property. The search also turned up a stolen double-axle trailer and multiple stolen credit cards. The truck is valued at $67,000 and the trailer is valued at $16,000, according to police.

Self was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Prison.
