INDEPENDENCE — Louisiana State Police troopers have continued their investigation of a deputy-involved shooting with a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Deputy and arrested a man on one count of second-degree murder.
On May 21st, LSP detectives were notified of Cornelius King Sr.’s discharge from a local hospital. He was arrested without incident and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
The shooting happened when deputies responded to an active domestic violence incident, where a woman had been stabbed and was fighting for her life. It was around 7 p.m. on May 8 when TPSO deputies responded to a call for Cornelius King Sr., 43, of Independence, allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Elaine Davis, 48, of Hammond.
Deputies attempted to enter the residence on Labruzza Lane near LA Hwy 40 in Independence, but King is accused of barricading the entrance. Deputies attempted to push the door open and were able to see King. Despite numerous loud commands from deputies, King refused to listen forcing deputies to fire multiple shots.
The female victim, Davis, was alive when deputies arrived and was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive her injuries. King was also taken to a hospital. He’s expected to be charged with second-degree murder after he is released from a hospital.
Per standard procedure, Tangipahoa SO requested an outside agency to investigate the deputy-involved shooting. It’s why State Police is now leading the investigation.
Louisiana State Police is continuing its investigation.
