HAMMOND — One person is now behind bars as Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies continue investigating a shooting from Thursday that left four people injured, including a four-year-old, and one person dead. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker said the deceased is believed to be one of the shooters.
One of the injured people was identified as a suspect and is now in TPSO’s custody, facing multiple charges related to the shooting.
TPSO says a verbal argument led up to a physical disagreement and led up to the shooting between two men in front of a crowd that unfolded on Willow Villa Rd. The first call to TPSO was around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 12th for a disturbance with gunfire and multiple people injured just off Old Baton Rouge Highway in Hammond.
“Upon arrival, we learned multiple shooting victims. What we know is we have five people shot. One of those is deceased, a 26-year-old male. The other four, including the four-year-old, are injured and at a local hospital being treated for injuries ranging from stable condition to critical condition,” Sheriff Sticker said. He added the shooters knew each other and it appears that three bystanders, including a 4-year-old boy, were “collateral damage” during the shooting.
The 26-year-old man who died on the scene has been identified as Javan Myers. “The deceased is one of the shooters we believe at this time. We have a second shooter in custody,” Sheriff Sticker said.
That suspect has been identified as Marquanvius Jones, 30-years-old. He’s facing charges for second-degree murder, 3 counts of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. He too was shot and injured.
Jones was taken into TPSO’s custody while still in the hospital, but has since been booked into the jail.
Three bystanders were also struck in the shooting: A 25-year-old man, who remains in serious condition; a 22-year-old woman and 4-year-old boy were treated and released, per TPSO.
TPSO says their investigation so far reveals Jones allegedly fired into the crowd and Myers fired back. Officials say the argument started over a request for a ride.
