BAKER — The Baker Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting where the accused gunman tells officers he was trying to sell marijuana when the shooting happened. It took place in the area of Chemin Drive and Groom Road in Baker on Saturday, May 16.
According to a warrant, officers responded to a shots fired call, and when they got to the scene, Gregory Johnson Sr. flagged them down and said his son, Gregory Johnson Jr. had shot a man who was trying to rob him.
Johnson Sr. said during the attempted robbery, he heard multiple gunshots and saw a black Nissan Altima driving northbound on Chemin Dr. He said the car didn’t stop at the intersection of Groom Rd., went through a fence, and stopped in a nearby field.
Officials identified the driver of the Altima as 21-year-old Javon Quatrevingt. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
17-year-old Johnson Jr. was arrested shortly after officers arrived on the scene and booked on one count of second-degree murder.
The investigation
The warrant states that investigators used projectile path investigation tools to determine who was sitting where in the car when the shooting happened. Officials said Quatrevingt was shot a second time in his back from the backseat with the bullet exiting through his chest.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and examined the Altima. According to the warrant, Johnson Jr. had full control of the gun during the shooting.
Officials said the location and direction of both shots were consistent with the gunman being in the rear driver-side, per the warrant, which is where Johnson Jr. later admitted he was sitting during the incident.
When the Altima was processed, the warrant states that investigators found a tan Taurus 9mm handgun in the rear driver-seat area, as well as a spent shell casing lodged inside the chamber. A second spent shell casing was recovered from the back passenger-side floorboard. They also found a small plastic bag containing a leafy green substance believed to be marijuana from the driver’s seat.
When the coroner moved the victim, investigators determined he sustained two gunshot wounds entering his back and exiting through his chest.
Suspect interview
According to the warrant, Johnson Jr. admitted to Baker Police officers that he was inside the car, sitting behind the driver. Johnson Jr. said he got in the car to sell marijuana, and that he fired a shot during a struggle inside the vehicle. He stated he heard the driver yell before firing a second shot.
Johnson Jr. told police he was trying shoot someone else in the car, whom he referred to as “D,” and said he had a gun, but that he shot the driver. Johnson Jr. said before the Altima crashed, the other occupants ran from the area.
Investigators also executed a search warrant of Johnson Jr.’s bedroom, where the found what they believed to be marijuana sitting on top of a scale.
