Tenant’s ex arrested for trying to set fire with 50 people in building

Ihab Mohamed Mustafa, 40, was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated arson along with additional charges.

A tenant told investigators that her ex-boyfriend, Mustafa, had been sending harassing messages to her.

On Halloween night, Baton Rouge Fire Investigators went out to 999 North 9th, Lake Tower Apartments, in reference to a building fire.

After an extensive investigation of where the fire started and cause, the fire was determined to be intentionally set.

The building was occupied by approximately 50 residents who woke up to several small fires that were set. It was determined an alarm had been disabled that would have alerted the residents of the fire.

Investigators also relied on video surveillance of a subject matching the defendant’s description.

The fire caused approximately $4,000 in damage.

Mustafa is also charged with one count each of simple burglary, aggravated criminal damage to property and terrorizing.
