NEW ORLEANS — Three of the first responding police officers to the terrorist attack on New Year’s Day in New Orleans were honored by the city’s district attorney for their courage and heroism in the moment.
District Attorney Jason Williams presented awards to Officer Jacobie Jordan, Sgt. Nigel Daggs, and Officer Christian Beyer, all with the New Orleans Police Department, specifically from District 5. Williams said these men acted decisively under fire to thwart the violent attack, which saved countless lives and prevented further harm to the innocents and were injured in the process.
Williams said these men did what others in similar circumstances have not done, which in turn, stopped further destruction to the French Quarter and saved the lives of many.
“These men did not freeze. The members of the NOPD did not freeze. They ran to danger. They put themselves in harm’s way,” Williams said during the presentation.
He presented the men with the first ‘Pillar of Courage’ award honoring their extraordinary bravery and service. “Never forget what they did for the people of this community,” he said.
On New Year’s Day, Shamsud-Din Jabbar carried out an attack in the city of New Orleans, using a pickup truck as a weapon when he drove into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m. Jabbar had also placed two coolers with IEDs at different sections of Bourbon Street before driving and killing New Year’s revelers.
The attack killed 14 people and Jabbar was also killed after exchanging gunfire with NOPD officers. More than 35 people were injured in the incident.
Other officers will also be honored for their bravery in response to the terrorist attack as they become available, Williams said.
