Tracking Hurricane Beryl

4pm Saturday: Hurricane warnings issued for Texas, tropical rain expected across Louisiana

BATON ROUGE — Tropical Storm Beryl is threatening lower and middle Texas with damaging hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge. The storm is also forecast to bring tropical rain to portions of Louisiana next week.

It is currently forecast to make landfall as a hurricane along the Gulf Coast on Sunday night.

“Recently, a convective burst has developed near the center of Beryl in the northwestern quadrant, and the low-level center is for the moment no longer exposed,” NHC forecasters said Saturday morning. “Tail Doppler radar data from the NOAA aircraft suggests that the cyclone has become better aligned vertically during the past few hours, likely due to the effects of this burst.”

A tropical storm warning is now in effect for portions of deep south Texas and additional warnings will likely be issued later today. Flash and urban flooding, some of which may be locally considerable, is likely across portions of the Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas beginning late Sunday through the middle of next week.

Louisiana is not forecast to see direct impacts from Beryl, however, southeast Louisiana will likely experience increased tropical moisture over the next several days, leading to more summer-like storms.

Current forecasts show 2-3 in. of rain possible early next week.

Beryl has made history throughout its trek across the Atlantic, becoming the strongest July hurricane on record in the Atlantic.

It is also only the 25th storm to reach sustained winds of at least 165 mph in the Atlantic at any time of the year. Additionally, Beryl was the first Atlantic hurricane to reach Category 4 strength in June.
