Train derails in Port Allen, 25 cars go off the track

A train derailed in a train yard on La. 1 near the Anchorage overpass in Port Allen Wednesday morning, according to officials.

No injuries have been reported and no leaks have been detected, according to a state department of environmental quality (DEQ) spokesperson.

According to Jean Kelly, the DEQ’s public information officer, 25 Union Pacific cars went off the tracks near Sugar House Road. DEQ did a drone flyover of the site to confirm there aren’t any leaks present.

Kelly said air monitoring is also being conducted. Equipment is at the scene to get the train cars back on the tracks, she said.

“At this point, it doesn’t seem that there are going to be serious environmental impacts,” Kelly said.

DEQ, the fire department and the state police are at the scene. The Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials Unit is handling the situation, according to Sgt. Landon Groger, a spokesperson with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
