Trash compactor kills man asleep in garbage truck

Hammond Police say on Tuesday, Jan. 11th, officers responded to a man found dead in a garbage truck. Upon arrival, HPD officers found Jermaine Watts, 42 years old of Hammond, in the mechanical portion of the garbage truck. Preliminary findings show Watts had fallen asleep in a commercial dumpster, possibly to escape the overnight weather conditions. When the contents of the dumpster were loaded into a garbage truck equipped with a mechanical compactor, it appears Watts suffered fatal injuries when the compactor was activated. The preliminary findings also show no signs of foul play. Official cause of death is pending the final autopsy and toxicology reports from the coroner's office.
