BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a 23-year veteran known for his dedication in the Motors Division, has died nearly two months after being critically injured in what investigators called an “intentional, targeted hit.”

Eisworth was critically injured on June 16, at Prescott and Joor Roads, near Greenwell Springs. He was on his motorcycle, headed to a work-related escort assignment, when East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators say Gad Black followed him for a short distance before “striking him with his truck and fleeing the area.”

‘For 49 days, Caleb fought hard’
The veteran officer did regain consciousness following the June crash, but never fully recovered from the injuries despite weeks of surgeries and small signs of progress.
An update on Sgt. Eisworth:
It is with a heavy heart that we announce that our beloved hero, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, has passed away. Caleb has fought a hard fight after being violently run down while performing his duties. For 49 days, Caleb fought hard, having many good days as he recovered from the numerous injuries. Unfortunately, his injuries proved to be too severe and his body was unable to continue fighting. We are comforted in knowing that Caleb was able to ask for and see his daughter and spend time with his friends and family during his final weeks.
We are thankful for the staff at OLOL for their compassion and patience. Their expertise allowed us to have the time with Caleb that we did after his violent attack. To the many first responders who have visited and been by our side, we say thank you. And to the public, who has supported us through the various fundraisers and other events, thank you. But most of all, we thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes and ask that the prayers continue.
Though Caleb is gone from us here, his memory will live on in the many lives he has touched. We will continue to honor him and will never let his memory fade. We love you MC24!

BRPD Police Chief T.J. Morse issued a statement:
It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share this update on our brother and friend, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth. While Caleb fought hard to overcome his injuries, moments ago, he lost his battle and passed away surrounded by loved ones.
I want to thank our entire Department for your visits to the hospital, for your prayers and encouragement, and for all the support you’ve shared with the Eisworth family and one another over the past seven weeks.
To our Sworn Officers, let’s all continue to honor Caleb in how we do this noble work. Let’s all continue to pray for this family that’s currently suffering an unimaginable loss, and support each other as well. Let’s vow today that we remain ready, willing, and eager to support them in all the years to come, as they will forever be part of our Baton Rouge Police family.
Funeral arrangements for Sgt. Eisworth will be communicated as soon as possible. Health and Safety will also be sharing peer support details as they become available.
Eisworth’s nearly two-month fight
In early July, doctors amputated both of Sgt. Eisworth’s legs above the knee. According to an update, “Almost immediately, his vitals improved to their best levels since he was rushed to the hospital.” Up until that point, Eisworth had been making “small improvements daily.”
Throughout his hospitalization, multiple updates described Eisworth as being in critical condition. While there were moments of improvement, doctors cautioned that “he is not out of the woods.” He required multiple surgeries to address his extensive injuries.
‘A tremendous officer’
Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse Jr. called Sgt. Eisworth a “tremendous officer,” noting that he had served 18 of his 23 years in the department’s Motors Division.
The community has shown an outpouring of support for Eisworth and his family, organizing numerous benefits and fundraisers throughout the region.
Black remains in custody pending the results of a sanity hearing. His bond has been denied.
