Louisiana State Police troopers are investigating two separate crashes, in which two people died. The most recent happened in Pointe Coupee Parish with a Livonia resident dying. Prior to that, a crash on I-12 claimed the life of a Texas man.
Pointe Coupee Parish
It was after 9:15 p.m. on July 7 when troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Patin Dyke Road at Driftwood Drive.
Brenton Pickett, 39, of Livonia, died in the crash.
The investigation so far shows that Pickett was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado east on Patin Dyke Rd. when he exited the roadway to the right and overturned.
Pickett was not buckled and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
Impairment is unknown at this time but a standard toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis.
East Baton Rouge Parish
Roughly three hours prior to the crash in Pointe Coupee Parish, troopers were on the scene of a deadly crash on I-12.
It was around 6:45 p.m. when troopers responded to Interstate 12 eastbound at milepost 25 in Livingston Parish.
Edward Mathis, 61, of Dickinson, Texas, died in the crash.
Troopers say Mathis was driving the 18-wheeler in the right lane of the eastbound interstate when for unknown reasons, he went off the roadway to the right. He hit multiple trees before going up in flames.
Mathis died on the scene. Due to the severity of the crash, impairment and seat belt usage are unknown.
