BATON ROUGE — Police have made two arrests in a terrifying May attack in which the victim was followed and then shot from another vehicle while on the road.
One of the people arrested was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of the crime. He was out on bond in an arrest where he is accused of waving a handgun while threatening to kill his mother, court records show.
The victim told police she was headed home from a friend’s house on May 25 when she noticed a gray pickup truck following her. While she was stopped at a light at Airline Highway and Tom Drive, a woman got out of the truck holding a cell phone and started recording the victim’s vehicle, according to an arrest warrant.
The victim said she recognized the woman, having had an argument with her a month ago. The victim started recording the encounter on her own phone, the warrant said. The woman walked around the victim’s vehicle, kicked it and yelled for the victim to get out, the warrant said.
Instead, the victim drove away when the light turned green. The people in the gray truck allegedly followed her for several blocks. When they got to Lobdell Boulevard, someone inside the truck fired two shots at the victim’s vehicle, the warrant said.
When the victim got to Greenwell Springs Road, the gray truck pulled alongside her vehicle. Someone sitting in the back passenger seat of the truck fired several shots into the vehicle, hitting the victim in her hand, back and hip. A bullet also grazed her face, the warrant said.
She was able to drive to a nearby gas station to call for help. UWK has learned that she remains in critical condition with limited mobility. She faces multiple surgeries as she works to recover from those gunshot wounds.
On Friday, June 12, police arrested Taliyah Dupaty, 23, as a principal to attempted second-degree murder, principal to illegal use of a weapon and principal to aggravated criminal damage to property.
She is accused of being the woman who walked around the victim’s vehicle trying to harass her into getting out, the arrest warrant said. She also is accused of helping others in the gray truck allegedly committing the crimes “by participating in the confrontation and pursuit that culminated in the shooting,” the warrant said.
A day before Dupaty’s arrest, on June 11th, police arrested Dupaty’s boyfriend Alick Washington, 18, on the same charges. Washington is accused of being in the gray truck with Dupaty, an arrest warrant said.
Washington told police he was in Thibodeaux at the time of the shooting, but his GPS ankle monitor records show otherwise, the warrant said.
Past Arrest & Violations to Bond Conditions
In April, Washington was called before State District Judge Fred Crifasi because of violations of bond conditions related to his September arrest on aggravated assault with a firearm.
In that case, he was not supposed to be at his mother’s house because he was in state custody and living in a group home, according to court records. He went to her house and, during an argument, he is accused of pulling out a gold-colored handgun with a drum magazine attached. He is accused of waving it around while making threats, court records show.
When Washington was in court in April, Crifasi looked at records indicating that he had failed several times to keep his ankle monitor charged appropriately. The judge told him that any further bond condition violations would result in revocation of his bond in that case.
His bond has been set at $200,000. Dupaty has no bond at this time.
A third arrest warrant has been issued in the May shooting, but the suspect has not been arrested.
