Motel double-murder was a self-defense killing and a bystander shot dead from the gunfire

BATON ROUGE — Two people are dead after a shooting at a motel off Airline Hwy. Monday night.

The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. at the Fountain Motel, which is roughly a half mile from Baton Rouge Police headquarters. UWK is told that the shooting happened in the motel parking lot.

Police tell UWK Michael Beverly, 28, opened fire at another man, who had just pulled up in a vehicle. Beverly then went and hid, but when he attempted to start shooting again, police said the victim returned fire and killed Beverly.

Also caught in the crossfire, however, was a bystander. Both people died at the scene. At this time, police say it is a justified homicide.

This is not the first incident at the motel. In February 2023, two men got into an argument in front of the motel before several rounds were fired. The victim took six bullets and was transported to a hospital. After that, the suspect fled to a nearby car dealership where he held a woman at gunpoint. Sources told UWK that the suspect then stole her vehicle.
