Two dead in St. Helena Parish crash

PINE GROVE —— Louisiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash that killed two people in St. Helena Parish Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say shortly after 12:45 p.m., troopers began investigating the two-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 16 near La Hwy 449 in St. Helena Parish.

The crash killed Christopher Koch, 36, from Metairie, and Travis Connell, 51, from Denham Springs.

State police say the investigation revealed Koch was driving a car traveling westbound on LA 16 with Connell as a passenger. At the same time, someone driving a Freightliner was traveling eastbound on the highway.

Koch’s car crossed the center line and hit the Freightliner for reasons still under investigation.

Koch sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene despite being properly restrained. Connell did not have a seatbelt on and died at the scene.

The person driving the Freightliner wore a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. The person was transported to a local hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
