The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged two men after target practicing killed a 13-yr-old boy. Their original charges were illegal discharge of a firearm, but charges have since been upgraded.
Quentin Larmar Leonard II, 31, and Donell Francois Jr., 33, were arrested Friday night after they were target practicing on the side of the levee on Hwy. 420 in Pointe Coupee Parish.
One of the bullets from the rifle hit a 13-yr-old boy in the chest who was riding his 4-wheeler on top of the levee and killed him.
Officials said the men were on the side of the levee and the children were on top of the levee when a rifle bullet ricocheted hitting the young boy.
District Attorney Tony Clayton said the crime fit under the manslaughter statute.
“I find this to be in egregious act from these hunters and either they knew or should have known that when you recklessly fire a firearm we’re human life is in danger, then you should suffer the maximum penalties under the law, particularly, when a child loses his life,” said Clayton. “The consequence of their actions is that this child will not be able to celebrate Christmas with his family. This is just a travesty of justice.”
The boy’s name has not been released at this time.
