ERWINVILLE — A mother and son were found dead following a house fire early Saturday morning, authorities confirmed.
The victims are 72-year-old Gloria Decuir and her son and caretaker 48-year-old Kevin Decuir, according to Sahajda Doc Willis from the West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office. The home belonged to Gloria Decuir.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office said the home did not have a working smoke alarm. “It’s not the flames that kill, it’s the smoke,” Chief Bryan Adams said.
The fire was reported after someone driving along Highway 190 spotted the blaze. A DOTD traffic camera captured images of the fire, showing the home fully engulfed in flames.
Fire crews responded to the scene, but the structure was already heavily involved when they arrived.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is handling the investigation.
