BATON ROUGE — A deadly fiery crash overnight on the interstate claimed a life and sent one person to a hospital.
It was around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16 when Baton Rouge Police officers responded to McCalop St. for a crash with a vehicle on fire. One person was trapped inside, but by this point, the fire had engulfed the entire vehicle and officials could not get the person out. They died on the scene.
Officers learned the driver of the vehicle was on Interstate 10 near the Louise exit when they hit the guardrail and went over the interstate, landing on McCalop St. The crash sparked the fire. Firefighters also responded to the call.
One person was pulled out of the vehicle and was rushed to a hospital. They are listed in critical condition. Another person was trapped inside the burning vehicle and did not survive.
The deceased has been identified as Cody Pounds, 34
Officials are investigating what led up to the single-vehicle crash.
