CENTRAL —- Funeral services have been set for William “Bill” Simon, longtime business owner and founder of Simple Simon Tires, located on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge.
An accident on March 28th around 5:30 a.m. killed Simon. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies and Central PD responded to Gurney Rd. near Centerra Court for a man hit by a vehicle while checking his mail. The victim, now identified as Simon, died at the scene.
Visitation will be held on April 9 and April 10th and the service is open to the public. On April 9th, visitation will be at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home at 11000 Florida Blvd. from 4pm-8pm.
Visit resume the following day, Thursday, April 10 at St. Alphonsus Church in Central from 11am till Noon, with a KC Rosary following the visitation.
According to Simple Simon’s website, Simon started the business in 1966 with just $1,500. He is known for his community involvement, including his participation in the East Baton Rouge Lion’s Club, where he previously served as a district governor and received one of the highest accolades in the organization, the Melvin Jones Award.
The accident occurred on Gurney Rd. between Blackwater and Joor in Central. Because Gurney Rd. is currently shut down to traffic, Central Private Lower School has to remain closed today.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Simon is who called it into officials and remained on scene.
Officials report that there is no evidence of any impairment on the driver’s part, however, the accident is still under investigation.
Just last night, there was a head-on crash on Lovett Rd. that sent three people to a hospital.
