EAST BATON ROUGE — A homeowner on Greenwell Springs Road is frustrated about repeat offenders after he tells UWK that he caught an intruder in the act of burglarizing his home earlier this week. The man who was arrested for burglary has had several previous charges of burglary, theft, and unauthorized entry, among other offenses.
It was early Monday morning when the homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, realized something was amiss after he checked notifications on his phone from his security camera. The camera had picked up that someone had passed through the side yard around 5:45 a.m. He didn’t see the notification until around 6:30 a.m.
Before he left his house for work that morning, the homeowner decided to check out back to see if anything was taken and armed himself as a precaution.
“I walked back there with my pistol and he was still there two hours later. I walked into the back of my pool house and saw things were moved around, and he had staged things that he was coming back to get,” he explained.
When the homeowner walked out of the pool house, he says he met Henry Taylor almost “head on.” Taylor had been walking around the corner, possibly in an attempt to get away, he said.
That’s when the homeowner said he picked up his pistol, fired a warning shot into the ground and told Taylor “don’t move.” He called the police at the same time.
He told UWK that when he met Taylor in that moment, he didn’t know if he was armed or had anything in his pockets, which is why he picked up his pistol before the police showed up.
By the time police arrived, Taylor was sitting down and the homeowner said he started to lower his pistol some. Taylor took that opportunity to take off running toward the woods at the back of the property, he said.
Police and SWAT members were able to arrest Taylor after he surrendered out of the woods around 9:45 a.m.
The next day, while mowing his grass, he says he noticed where Taylor had staged some of the items he had taken from the pool shed.
The homeowner said he’s frustrated that someone with previous charges like Taylor would be given such low bonds that allow them to be back on the streets to commit similar crimes.
“I just don’t understand why they got these guys who still run around with the rap sheet that this guy has…he needs to be put away,” he said.
Henry Taylor arrested less than 24 hours after allegedly breaking into homeowner’s tool shed
Taylor’s probation for an April 2024 arrest was terminated successfully this past June after he completed anti-theft courses and addiction rehabilitation.
Less than 24 hours after he was arrested for simple burglary at the home, Taylor was out on a $10,000 bond. And that same night, he allegedly broke into a guard house at the parish prison before ever leaving the grounds.
According to his warrant, Taylor broke into a guard shack, taking a prison radio valued around $5,000 before he pulled the plug on a surge protector for the pole light and perimeter surveillance cameras. The warrant also states that Taylor stole multiple construction items from near the prison’s Logistics building and threw those items over the 10-foot perimeter fence.
Taylor was arrested again at his home on July 22nd on the charges of simple burglary, theft, simple criminal damage to property, tampering with surveillance, and criminal trespass.
