WALKER — The head baseball coach at Walker High School was arrested on Thursday, accused of misappropriating school funds. According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Nicholas Scelfo allegedly stole nearly $30,000 from the school’s baseball program, which he led.
“Beginning in September 2023, Walker High School Head Baseball Coach Nicholas Scelfo submitted multiple invoices for reimbursement on equipment he purchased with his own funds for the baseball program,” sheriff Jason Ard said. “The total amount that was reimbursed to Scelfo was $29,360.21. At the end of the 2024 Baseball season, Walker High School officials conducted an equipment inventory. They discovered that the equipment Scelfo claimed to have ordered did not exist.”
Detectives revealed that the invoices Scelfo allegedly used were fraudulent, enabling him to misappropriate funds from the school. Ard said that detectives reached out to the vendors from whom Scelfo allegedly ordered equipment, and they confirmed that no orders had been placed.
Scelfo is charged with felony theft in excess of $25,000 and is currently being processed into the Livingston Parish Detention Center.
Livingston Parish Schools superintendent Jody Purvis tells UWK that Scelfo’s employment is under review and that LPPS will follow all applicable policies and procedures.
Walker High School has been been rocked by scandal and tragedy this school year. In October, their principal resigned following criticism of stripping an honor student of her scholarship and leadership role. And in January, the school mourned the loss of senior Blakeleigh Weems. The 17 year old was killed in a tragic crash on New Year’s.
