New Year’s Tragedy

It was just before 1 a.m. on the first day of 2024 when a Walker High School senior with dreams of becoming a lawyer was killed in a crash.

It happened at 12:50 a.m. as the 17-yr-old was at a light coming off the exit ramp at I-12 westbound in Denham Springs at Range Ave.

At the same time, a driver going north on Range Ave. hit the car on the driver side.

The 17-yr-old’s parents Nelson Weems and Chasity Johnstone have identified her to UWK as Blakeleigh Lore’n Weems.

Weems was rushed to a hospital but did not survive. The passenger in that vehicle had minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle who hit the car also had minor injuries.

Weems was a senior and cheerleader at Walker High School and described as a very popular young lady who everyone loved. Her parents tell UWK she was part of Beta and the digital media team at the school as well.

“A devastating loss cannot be put into words how we as a family feel,” said Weems’ mother Chasity Johnstone.

“Blakeleigh Weems was a one of a kind young lady with an undeniably, bright future ahead. She was recently accepted to LSU with academic scholarships and dreamed of a career in marketing and becoming a lawyer. She loved everything Disney princess and wanted to intern at Walt Disney World. She had the voice of an angel and was a born entertainer. She was a Walker high cheerleader and served on SGA and was involved in Beta, and loved digital media. She always saw the light in every darkness. She loved selflessly, and the kindness she showed everyone was noted in whoever she met. No words will ever be great enough to describe such a beautiful human being. We will forever be left with a void in our hearts. We will miss her beyond comprehension,” her mother added.

The family has asked for privacy and time to grieve. “Prayers are appreciated at this time,” her mother added.

Denham Springs Police is investigating the crash and said it it still under investigation if the Walker High senior did not stop at the red light or try to piece together exactly what happened. Meanwhile, the driver on Range Ave. did have a green light, according to DSPD.

“Impairment is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash,” according to DSPD.

Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers, which will be submitted for analysis.

  1. Prayers going up for her family and friends. My heart goes out to them! I know all too well how it feels to lose a child. It’s just not right to have to bury your children. God Bless! Rip Angel
