ALBANY — A man convicted of murdering 67-year-old Barry Roussel of Ponchatoula in July 2023 has been sentenced to life behind bars. Last month, a jury found Edward Paul Louque of Walker guilty of murdering Roussel. The jury was selected on a Tuesday and handed down the guilty verdict two days later.
At Louque’s sentencing on Aug. 4th, Roussel’s daughter, Jenny Roussel Bourgeois, spoke, delivering her words to Louque himself.
“Originally I wanted to come in this courtroom today and speak only of the pain and anguish your selfish actions have caused. But then I realized as many times as I’ve seen you in this courtroom over the past two years, I have never–not once–seen an ounce of remorse for what you’ve done. You truly are a callous, narcissistic man,” Bourgeois said.
She went on to say that Louque’s actions have hurt his own family, because they have lost a father, grandfather, brother and friend while he remains in prison for the rest of his life. She added, though, that even from prison, he can see pictures of his family and grandchildren growing up, while her father will never be able to do so.
Bourgeois also said in her statement that while she’s been in law enforcement for 20 years, she’s seen many horrendous things, but the photos she saw of her father from the trial still haunt her. “No daughter should ever have to see photos like that of her father.”
She expressed her gratitude to the court, DA’s office and sheriff’s office for providing justice along with “giving my father a voice when he could not speak for himself.”
For Louque, though, she said he “deserves to die in jail,” where he can never destroy another person or family again.
“I will not carry hate in my heart for your Mr. Louque, but you will never have my forgiveness,” she concluded.
The shooting happened on July 22, 2023. LPSO deputies and Albany Police officers responded to the Tourist Information Center on Catholic Hall Rd. in Albany for the shooting.
Following the shooting, Louque was charged with second degree murder.
Officials say Louque and his wife were friends with the victim.
