Warrant: Mother of 4-year-old who shot himself inside their home “went back to sleep” after hearing gunshot

BATON ROUGE — Arieana Kionte Scott, the mother of the 4-year-old who shot himself in the head inside his room, is now facing four felony charges.

Scott, 22, has been charged with improper supervision of a minor, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, illegal carry of a weapon, possession of a machine gun, and distribution/possession with the intent to distribute Schedule I CDS. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Police responded to Scott’s residence on 69th Ave. in Baton Rouge on Wednesday after her son reportedly gained access to a firearm and shot himself in the head. According to the arrest warrant, Scott claimed she was asleep when she heard a loud noise in the house. She then stated that she “went back to sleep and woke up a short while later.”

The court document says that when Scott woke up, she called for her son. When he didn’t answer, she went to his bedroom and found him “in a pool of blood”.

Initially, Scott denied knowledge of the firearm in the home, but later told police that it was typically stored in her bedroom closet.

As UWK initially reported, police found a 40-caliber Glock handgun equipped with an illegal “Glock switch,” enabling fully automatic firing. A single shell casing was recovered from the bedroom.

Additionally, police discovered a large bag of marijuana, along with smaller baggies packaged for sale, and a scale in a closet adjacent to the child’s bedroom. Scott admitted to knowing about the marijuana but claimed it was for her boyfriend’s “personal usage.”

Scott has a prior conviction for possession or obtaining controlled dangerous substances by fraud in Texas in December 2022.

The 4-year-old was last reported in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
