BATON ROUGE — A 31-year-old woman is now behind bars after she was wanted by police as an accessory to her own December shooting. Her “estranged ex-boyfriend,” a 15-year-old, is accused of doing the shooting, according to her warrant.
Witnesses said 15-year-old Damon King shot Charlitria Mariona Thomas, 31, in the face on Dec. 18 at a house in the 200 block of Evergreen Drive, the warrant said.
They had been arguing when “King produced a firearm and discharged one round, striking Thomas in the face, before fleeing the scene on foot,” the warrant said.
Thomas was rushed into surgery to repair the injury to her jaw after the shooting. She later told police King stole her purse after he shot her, the warrant said.
Police got an arrest warrant for King through juvenile court.
King was on the run until New Year’s Eve, when he was arrested in Mississippi in a traffic stop, thanks to a BOLO (be on the lookout) from BRPD on Thomas’ car. At the time of his arrest, he happened to be in Thomas’ car with her driving. The teenager was booked on the outstanding warrants and Thomas was released.
Baton Rouge Police then obtained a warrant for Thomas’ arrest on Jan. 29, accusing her of being an accessory after the fact to King’s crimes, court records show.
On Feb. 10, Thomas was arrested on drug and traffic charges in Panama City, Fla. She was accused of having generic Xanax not prescribed to her in a bottle that also contained oxycodone that she was prescribed, according to Panama City Police. She posted bond a few days later.
Baton Rouge Police did not immediately respond to questions about whether Panama City police should have noticed the outstanding Louisiana warrant.
In April, BRPD got another warrant charging Thomas as an accessory after the fact to her own attempted second-degree murder and armed robbery. She is also accused of being an accessory after the fact to illegal use of a weapon and two counts of illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
Surveillance cameras that captured Thomas’ shooting showed that King had two handguns at the time, the warrant said.
Thomas was booed into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Aug. 6.
