Ways to help victims of Mississippi tornadoes

WALKER, La. — The Walker Police department is holding a disaster relief drive through Wednesday to help tornado victims in Mississippi.

An EF-5 tornado ripped through the Rolling Fork, Armory, and surrounding areas of Mississippi Friday night, destroying homes and businesses, killing more than 20 persons, injuring many more, and leaving several people missing.

The department announced it will be collecting water, toiletries, non-perishable items, and other necessities for those in need from Monday through Tuesday, March 28 from 8 a..m. until 6 p.m.

Donations can be dropped off at police headquarters, 10136 Florida Boulevard.

Other organizations are looking to help as well.

The Independence Volunteer Fire Department is collecting supplies and monetary donations to help the victims in western Mississippi. Items can be delivered to the Central Station, 163 W. 7th Street.

On March 31, the department is headed to help the Mississippi communities affected. The Independence Fire Chiefs and IFD volunteers are going to provide 600 meals to the victims of the natural disaster.

On Mondy, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves provided an update on the situation.

“The storms had a terrible impact on the lives and livelihoods of Mississippians,” he wrote on social media. “There were three fatalities and five injuries in Carroll County, two fatalities and 50 injuries in Monroe County, three fatalities and 15 injuries in Humphreys County, 13 fatalities in Sharkey County, and two other fatalities.”

Reeves said impacted residents can register for FEMA Individual Assistance by going online to http://disasterassistance.gov or calling 800-621-FEMA (3362).

As of 6 a.m. Monday, there were 24,387 power outages across 16 counties.

There were three shelters established for residents. One in Rolling Fork, one in Silver City, and one in Amory.
