WBR: Jury finds Raxx murderer guilty in second trial

It took a jury just over one hour to find Ronald Campbell guilty of second-degree murder.

This was the second time District Attorney Tony Clayton took Campbell to trial. Last time, a judge had to declare a hung jury because the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

Second degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence in Louisiana. However, a sentencing will still be held.

The jury was seated on Tuesday, Oct. 25th. Opening statements were the following day with closing arguments Thursday morning.

It’s been over two months since West Baton Rouge Judge Tonya Lurry declared a hung jury in the murder trial of Ronald Dwayne Campbell.

On Aug. 18, 2022, a jury deliberated for more than seven hours but could not reach a unanimous verdict in the second degree murder trial for Campbell. The law now requires all murder verdicts must be unanimous.

It’s why jury selection started on Tuesday, Oct 25th. They were able to successfully seat a jury and opening statements are at 9am on Oct. 26th.

The incident goes back to Sept. 18, 2021 around 1:45am when Trey Allen was shot in the Raxx Bar & Grill parking lot on Hwy. 190 in Erwinville. Trey Allen was transported to a hospital but died of his injuries.

Campbell was arrested and charged with second degree murder. He was 17 at the time of the killing, but a hearing was held on Sept. 20th to charge him as an adult.

It’s why Campbell is being tried as an adult.

Jury selection started Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022.
