WBRSO: Investigation launched after woman jumps out of police car into Miss. River

PORT ALLEN —- West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Officials say multiple deputies are under investigation after a woman was able to get out of a police car and jumped into the MS River.

The incident happened on Saturday, August 19, just before 4:30 am.

WBRSO says deputies responded to a domestic dispute between a man and woman in West Baton Rouge Parish. In order to separate the woman from the domestic situation, deputies were taking the woman to a location in Baton Rouge per her request.

While en route in the deputy’s police car, WBRSO says the woman requested some fresh air. That’s when the deputy rolled down her side of the window. From there, the woman was able to open the door from the outside, at which time she got out of the police car while on top of the Mississippi River Bridge on I-10.

Deputies were able to get the woman back into the unit after a brief struggle.

As deputies were preparing to clear the bridge, the woman was somehow once again able to get out of the police car and this time, jumped over the side of the bridge into the water.

A nearby marine boat company helped rescue the woman. She was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The woman’s role in the domestic situation is under investigation at this time as WBRSO tries to piece together exactly what happened.

An internal affairs investigation was launched first thing Monday morning into all the deputies involved in the case to determine if any policies or procedures were violated.

Criminal charges are pending at this time, per WBRSO.
