BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge’s annual Wearin’ of the Green St. Patrick’s Day Parade will now roll on Sunday due to a severe weather threat across south Louisiana on Saturday.
Celebrating its 40th year, the parade was originally scheduled for March 15. However, with the threat of lightning, strong winds, and a possible tornado watch in the Baton Rouge area, organizers have rescheduled it for noon on March 16.
The 6th Annual Shamrock Run 5K will also begin at noon along its usual route.
“This decision wasn’t made lightly and consisted of the expert opinions from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the EBR Mayor’s Office, local law enforcement, State Climatologist Jay Grimes and local media meteorologists,” organizers posted on Facebook Wednesday.
Organizers noted that since the parade’s inception in 1986, there has never been a severe weather threat like the one forecasted this weekend. While the parade has rolled through rain, bitter cold, and even sleet in past years, this is the first time it has faced such extreme conditions.
