WEST FELICIANA — A second ninth grader has been arrested following the discharge of a gun on a school bus Tuesday, according to the West Feliciana Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Brian Spillman says that both students, aged 14, had brought guns to school after agreeing to “swap” weapons with each other.
“Our investigation has revealed that both students possessed handguns at school on Tuesday and exchanged them during the school day. There is no indication that either student brought the weapons with the intent to use them at school; rather, they agreed to swap guns and used the school as the point of exchange. Additionally, both weapons had been reported stolen recently,” said Sheriff Spillman.
Spillman added that both are fourteen years old and are in custody awaiting a continued custody
hearing.
West Feliciana Parish Schools Superintendent Hollis Milton stated in a release on Tuesday that, following the bus routes on October 1, a loud noise was reported during an afternoon route on a school bus. This incident was communicated to the West Feliciana High School administration.
Initially, the students and bus driver believed the noise was a firecracker. However, upon further investigation, the administration discovered that a high school student had allegedly brought a gun on the bus, which discharged inside the student’s backpack.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for weapons, and any student who violates that policy will be expelled pending due process,” said Milton in a release Tuesday.
The students have since been expelled from school, UWK has confirmed.
“Please help us by educating your child about the dangers of bringing a weapon on campus. We have a zero-tolerance policy, and we take these behaviors extremely seriously. Safety is our top priority, and West Feliciana Parish Schools along with the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Milton continued.
