West Feliciana schools closed Thursday after “extensive damage” to student services center

WEST FELICIANA — West Feliciana Parish schools are closed Thursday after heavy storm damage and the decision is pending for Friday, April 12th.

It comes after extensive damage to the West Feliciana Schools’ student services center.

“We will make a decision tomorrow (Thursday) for Friday depending on electricity and road conditions,” said West Feliciana Parish Schools Superintendent Hollis Milton.

Milton said all the schools in the parish appear to be in good shape while the student services center took the brunt of the storm damage. Pictures from the area show trees down and a courtyard full of debris. Milton added many of the schools do also have trees down and debris at each school that will take time to clean up.

“We are very fortunate that we canceled school today. We are going through the recovery phase and we have so many people helping us,” said Milton.

At its peak, 95% of the parish was in the dark. Crews are working around the clock to restore power to everyone but many in West Feliciana and East Feliciana parishes remain without power.

West Feliciana Parish has numerous areas that were impacted with trees and powerlines down, trees in homes and there was even a tree that crushed a Demco truck with the employee inside.

Along with West Feliciana schools closed Thursday, East Feliciana public schools and Pointe Coupee Parish schools will also remain closed on April 11.
