Winn-Dixie stores could soon become Aldi as low-cost grocer plans expansion

BATON ROUGE — Aldi, the low-cost grocery chain, is embarking on a $9 billion investment initiative over the next five years to establish 800 new locations. The new stores will come in the form of new openings and by converting some Winn-Dixie stores.

“With this commitment to add 800 stores in the next five years, we’ll be where our shoppers need us while positively impacting the communities we serve,” said Aldi CEO Jason Hart in a press release.

The Illinois-based company’s expansion strategy encompasses the impending acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets.

“Starting mid-summer, Aldi will begin a phased approach to the store conversion process. Aldi anticipates that approximately 50 stores will begin the conversion process during the latter half of 2024, with the majority of these stores reopening as Aldi in 2025,” the company said.

While not all Winn-Dixie locations will undergo transformation, the grocer clarified that some will retain their existing branding. The majority of Winn-Dixie stores are concentrated in the deep south, including four in the Baton Rouge area. However, Aldi did not specify which locations would be subject to conversion.

Presently, Aldi operates 14 locations in Louisiana, with three stores in the Baton Rouge area. The grocery chain has signaled its intent to sustain and extend its expansion efforts in the Capitol City.
