BATON ROUGE — A woman accused of selling drugs that led to an overdose death was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 18, on a murder charge.
Montronnik Johnson, 27, was booked with second-degree murder in the July death of Austin Cruz at his home on Noble Reams Road in Zachary.
Investigators found Cruz, also 27, dead in his bedroom on July 2 with pills, a white powder and a plastic straw in his pocket. A toxicology test showed that he had fentanyl, THC, antidepressants and opioids in his system, according to Johnson’s warrant. His family told investigators he was a long-term drug user, the warrant said.
The coroner’s office found that he died from a fentanyl overdose.
His phone showed a text exchange with Johnson about buying drugs. Shortly after 1 p.m. on July 1, she texted him that she was five minutes from his house with drugs he wanted, the warrant said.
A witness identified Johnson as the person who delivered the drugs. Detectives were able to locate records from a license plate reader that put Johnson’s red Jaguar near Cruz’s house around the time of the text saying she was on her way, the warrant said.
