Upon arrival, officers discovered Sirena Franklin, who had been shot in the chest. She was transported to an area hospital in critical condition but, unfortunately, did not survive.

Angelique Chatman, who lived in the same apartment complex, was arrested in connection to Franklin’s shooting. Sources tell UWK the two got into a heated verbal argument minutes before the shooting and several people led officers to Chatman. She’s now charged with second-degree murder.

This most recent homicide highlights a pattern that BRPD Chief TJ Morse says hold true for majority of homicides and shootings this year.

“The vast majority of shootings we have seen this year have been targeted acts of violence or retaliatory in nature,” said Chief Morse.

Chief Morse notes that a significant number of these incidents involve teenagers. However, he points out that the police recently apprehended nine individuals, with the assistance of EBRSO, charging them with offenses related to guns, drugs, and even gang activities.

Despite that, so far this year, there is an 83% increase in homicides compared to this point in time last year.
