Zachary elects new mayor & police chief

Zachary voters elected David McDavid as the new mayor and Darryl Lawrence Sr. as the new police chief.

McDavid claimed the win in the Dec. 10th runoff with 3172 votes compared to his opponent Francis Nezianya’s 2641 votes.

“First, I want to thank my lord Jesus Christ. I’m humble that the citizens of Zachary elected me as their Mayor,” said mayor-elect McDavid. “I want to thank my campaign manager, campaign workers friends, my family and my wife who have supported me in this campaign for Mayor.”

McDavid spent nearly 40 years in law enforcement before deciding to run for the top position in the city of Zachary. McDavid started in law enforcement when he was 18 years old. The last nearly 11 years, he spent as the police chief for Zachary Police.

Meanwhile, his empty seat for police chief also went to a run off between Asst. Police Chief Darryl “Schuster” Lawrence, Sr. and Justin Nevels.

In the end, veteran police officer Lawrence won as the new top cop with 3074 votes compared to Nevels’ 2699.

“First, thank you to Zachary. I have been serving Zachary for 33 years and I am excited about this new role,” newly elected Chief Lawrence. “I have been preparing for the role of Chief of Police my entire career. I have a transition plan and I am ready to work. I promise to service with Accountability, Professionalism and Integrity.”

Both elections went to a run off because neither candidate was able to close more than 50% of the votes.

Zachary voters also elected Republican David Conachen as city court judge.

Zachary voters have also elected three council members with Jennifer Boyd winning by only 7 votes compared to her opponent Lael Montgomery in District 5.

District 4 will be represented by Republican James Graves winning with 537 votes. Sharon Turner took 454 votes.

District 1 elected Republican Brandy Westmoreland had 646 votes with her opponent Freida Morris losing with 589 votes.
