ZACHARY —- An argument turned into reports of shots fired during the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Zachary on Saturday night, but Zachary Police officers say there were no actual shots fired.
It was around 8:30 p.m. when Zachary Police officers responded to the festival for a fight and reports of shots fired. Those officers were within close proximity to the festival to respond quickly, ZPD said.
“The officers collected numerous witness statements and reviewed security camera footage of the incident. Based on that evidence, it was determined that a battery (fight) had likely occurred and that a firearm may have been brandished, but no shots were fired. No spent shell casings were recovered at the scene, and multiple witnesses in close proximity to the incident reported that they did not hear any gunshots,” ZPD said.
As a precaution, the festival was shut down for the night. It was scheduled for music through 9:30 p.m.
Two people were transported to a hospital for the fight, UWK is told.
“We are relieved the investigation confirmed there were no shots fired at the festival. We look forward to meeting with festival organizers to review our findings and make any adjustments needed to strengthen security at future events.” ZPD Chief Darryl Lawrence said.
