BATON ROUGE —- A 44-year-old man from Zachary died in a crash on Hwy. 61 Friday morning.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m. on November 15, State Police troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 61, just south of LA 964 in East Baton Rouge Parish.
Leandrew Coates, 44, of Zachary, died in the crash.
The investigation so far shows that Coates was driving a 2003 Nissan 350Z south on US 61, just south of LA 964 at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a 2023 Mack dump truck was headed north on US 61, and was making a left turn into a private drive.
That’s when Coates crashes into the passenger side of the Mack dump truck.
Coates was not buckled and died on the scene. The driver of the Mack truck was properly buckled and was not injured.
Impairment is not a suspected factor in this crash, however, standard toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. This crash is still under investigation.
