ZACHARY — A quiet afternoon in a Zachary neighborhood turned unsettling over the weekend as multiple gunshots rang out in broad daylight.
One resident, who was sitting in her living room braiding her daughter’s hair, described hearing “between seven and ten pops” suddenly break the calm.
It was unmistakably gunfire.
“I knew exactly what the sound was,” said the woman, who requested anonymity when speaking with UWK.
She immediately told her daughter to go to her room for safety. With the living room at the front of the house and large windows overlooking the street, the woman feared for their safety.
“It rattled the entire front of the house,” she said. “I thought one of my windows was fixing to shatter.”
Once her daughter was safely in the bedroom, the woman called 911 and then stepped outside, where neighbors had begun to gather.
Police responded, arriving with multiple units, she said. The quick response was likely due to the department’s proximity to the shooting scene.
The woman inspected her home and fence but did not find any visible damage. She remains uncertain if bullets struck her property, given how close the shooting was.
Footage from a neighbor’s home security camera captured the sound of gunshots moments before a white car sped into view. In the video, a person in the front passenger seat appears to lean out of the open window, holding what seems to be a gun. More shots are heard as the car drives out of the frame.
The gunfire occurred on Florida Street in Zachary. The anonymous resident expressed concern for her child’s safety, adding that while she has unfortunately grown accustomed to hearing gunshots in the area, this was the closest encounter she has experienced.
UWK reached out to the Zachary Police Department for details. A spokesperson confirmed they are investigating a shooting in the 4100 block of Florida Street.
Officials stated that there were no reported victims and clarified that they are not labeling the incident as a drive-by shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
