French Settlement man held without bond after allegedly shooting at multiple, random people

FRENCH SETTLEMENT, La. — Officials say the man accused of shooting at multiple people in Livingston Parish, allegedly while wearing a ski mask and body armor, will be held without bond pending a contradictory bail hearing.

Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested Douglas Maurras, 45, of French Settlement after he allegedly shot his neighbor before driving off to at least two more locations in French Settlement & Springfield, where he allegedly shot at people. He was eventually arrested with a ski mask and body armor in his possession.

Court documents show Maurras started his March 22nd afternoon by allegedly shooting several rounds inside his own home on Hwy. 16 before going to a neighbor’s house and “randomly pulling a gun” and shooting his 68-year-old neighbor in the face. His neighbor had to be airlifted and at last check, was listed in critical yet stable condition.

After severely wounding him neighbor, Maurras is accused of droving a few miles down Highway 42 in French Settlement where he randomly shot at a 2021 Chevrolet Eatel van, which was parked along the highway, according to arrest documents. Thankfully, no one was in the van.

Maurras is then accused of following a woman down a private driveway, according to sources. When the woman got out of her vehicle, Maurras pulled a gun out and shot towards her. Thankfully, he missed her as she dove to the ground. A family member of that woman saw what happened and jumped in his vehicle to follow Maurras, according to sources.

Maurras left that home in Springfield and followed a father and son to a home, where someone was inside working on the house. Maurras is said to have gone inside the home and asked the worker for a bottle of water before he went back outside. Sources say the father and son asked the worker if Maurras was a friend of his and he replied that he was not and that he assumed he was the their friend.

Around this time, Maurras allegedly went to his vehicle, took off his shirt and had on a bullet-proof vest. That’s when the father and son duo called 911.

Maurras was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal use of a weapon, simple criminal damage to property, unlawful use or possession of body armor and criminal trespassing.

Livingston Parish District Attorney Scott Perilloux’s office says in the arrest document “Maurras presents an imminent danger to the community and should be held without bond during his criminal prosecution.”

The bail hearing is set for March 27 at 9 a.m., at which time prosecutors will ask the judge to deny bond after the alleged incidents on March 22nd.
